Claims

When a bond is called or a debtor does not pay

Our claims desk exists for the day the cover is needed. A specialist team handles every notification from receipt to settlement, through your broker where there is one, and the person who opens the file is the person who closes it.

Notify a claim

Start the process with us

Write to the claims desk, through your broker where you have one, with the reference of the policy or bond and a short account of what has happened. We acknowledge every notification the same working day and tell you then what else we need.

Hours
Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00 (IST)

Or use the form. The form below reaches the claims desk directly. It begins with the policy or bond reference, and every other detail refers to it.

Notify a claim online

Start with the reference printed on the policy schedule or the certificate. Everything that follows is read against it.

The policy or bond

Exactly as printed on the policy schedule or the certificate. Nothing can be opened without it.

If the schedule or certificate names it.

The name as it appears on the policy or the certificate.

The beneficiary named on the certificate; for a credit policy, the buyer whose account is overdue.

As stated on the certificate or the limit decision.

If you know it; every policy names one.

The claim

The default, the call or the due date that passed.

A figure with its currency, where you have one.

In your own words: the contract or the account, the default and, where you have it, how the loss is calculated.

Who is notifying

Optional, but it usually saves a day.

Fields marked * are required.

For beneficiaries

A call on a bond or a guarantee we issued

The employer, contracting authority, administration or counterparty named on a certificate as beneficiary. A conditional bond asks you to establish the default and the loss; an on-demand bond is paid against a compliant written demand in the form the wording states. Either way, send the demand in writing, in the form the certificate requires, with the certificate reference.

  • The bond or certificate reference, exactly as printed
  • The written demand, signed by the person the wording authorises, in the form the wording prescribes
  • The contract or procedure the bond secures and the clause under which it is called
  • A description of the default and, for a conditional bond, the loss claimed and how it is calculated

For policyholders

A non-payment under a credit insurance policy

The policyholder notifies an overdue account within the period the policy states, and asks us to intervene or to indemnify once the waiting period has run. Notify early: an overdue report filed on time preserves the cover, and collection started early recovers more.

  • The policy reference and the buyer concerned, with the credit limit that applied
  • The invoices, their due dates and the amount overdue
  • The steps already taken to collect, and any dispute the buyer has raised
  • The date you became aware of the insolvency, where there is one

What to send

The information every notification needs

The documents depend on the cover and the kind of claim, but a handful of things are common to all of them. Send what you have; we will ask for the rest once the file is open.

  1. 01The policy, bond or certificate reference
  2. 02The date of the event — the default, the call, the due date that passed
  3. 03The date you are notifying, and the date you first became aware
  4. 04A full description of what happened, in your own words
  5. 05The written demand or claim, where one has been made
  6. 06The name and full details of the claimant
  7. 07Documents evidencing the facts: the contract, the invoices, the correspondence

Once the file is open and in progress we will be in touch — through your broker, or through the loss adjuster or lawyer we appoint — for the specific information and documents the assessment needs.

Why trust your claim to us

Three things you can expect

Speed

Every notification is acknowledged the same working day and read by a specialist, not routed to a queue. A compliant demand on an on-demand bond is paid within the period the wording states.

Transparency

Through your broker and the professionals we appoint, you know where the file stands at every step — what has been received, what is being assessed, what is still needed.

Specialist handling

Surety and credit claims are not property claims. The people who assess them read contracts, pliegos and counter-indemnities for a living, and they are the same people the underwriters sit beside.

Our approach

A claim is a commitment, not a process

Behind every call on a bond there is a project that has stopped and a beneficiary who has to finish it; behind every unpaid invoice there is a business waiting for its money. We handle each file as the moment the cover was bought for.

  • Objectivity

We read the wording and the facts, and we pay what is owed under them — neither more nor less.

  • Efficiency

The file is opened on the day it arrives, and every request for information is made once, with the reason.

  • Experience

Each claim is handled by a specialist in surety and credit, with a loss adjuster or a lawyer appointed where the file needs one.

  • Closeness

One person owns the file from notification to settlement, in close contact with your broker, so you are told of developments as they happen.

  • Recovery

What we pay under a bond is owed back to us by the principal under its counter-indemnity, and what we pay under a credit policy is pursued from the buyer. Recovery is handled by the same desk, so the beneficiary and the policyholder never carry it.

Frequently asked questions

What claimants ask us

How do I notify a claim?
Through your broker, who will help you assemble the notification and follow it with us. If that is not possible, write to the claims desk directly at the address on this page, or use the claim notification form, starting with the policy or bond reference. A beneficiary calling a bond sends the written demand in the form the wording prescribes.
When must a claim be notified?
Within the period the policy or bond wording states, and in any case as soon as you become aware of the default, the non-payment or the circumstances that may lead to a claim. Early notification lets us investigate the causes while they can still be established, and lets collection start while there is most to recover.
What documents do I need to provide?
It depends on the cover and the kind of claim, but every notification needs the policy or bond reference, the dates, a full description, the written demand where there is one, the claimant’s details and the documents evidencing the facts. Once the file is open we ask for anything specific the assessment needs — once, with the reason.
Who assesses the claim?
A specialist in surety and credit claims at our desk in Dublin, with a loss adjuster or a lawyer appointed and paid by us where the complexity of the file requires it. In Spain the file is received and administered by our associated agency and assessed by us.
I am a beneficiary. How quickly is an on-demand bond paid?
Within the period the wording states, against a demand that complies with it — signed by the person the wording authorises, in the form it prescribes, within its validity. A conditional bond asks you to establish the default and the loss first, and we investigate both before paying.
I am the policyholder on a bond that has been called. What should I do?
Tell us at once, with your account of the facts and any defence you have to the demand. Do not admit liability, settle or attempt to settle with the beneficiary without our written agreement: the direction of the claim is ours, and anything we pay is owed back under the counter-indemnity, so the two of us need to act together.
Can I appoint my own lawyer or loss adjuster?
As a rule we appoint and pay the professionals a file needs, from a panel that knows surety and credit. Where the policy gives the insured a free choice of lawyer, it says so, and the fees have to be agreed with us before they are incurred.
How should I address the company?
For anything about a claim, through your broker, who knows the file and will help you put it correctly. Every policy and certificate we issue names the intermediary who arranged it; if you cannot find it, write to the claims desk with the reference and we will tell you.
